Adherence to environmental legislation and regulatory requirements is the starting point of our commitment to minimize our environmental footprint across our business activities, from product development and manufacturing to distribution and waste disposal. Our majority-owned manufacturing facilities around the world are ISO 14001 and RC 14001 qualified and audited by Quality Systems Registrars, Inc. All facilities also follow Axalta’s own Environment, Health and Safety Policy, which includes, and in some instances exceeds, standards set by either ISO or Responsible Care. Employees that are responsible for managing these systems receive regular training to ensure compliance.
We are committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for all of our employees. We expect and trust that each employee at Axalta complies with company policies and procedures to uphold our commitment to safe and ethical operations.
Managing Greenhouse Gases, Water and Waste
One way we preserve the environment is through the reduction of the intensity of operational emissions . We have a goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7 percent between baseline year 2013 and realization in 2020. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is primarily achieved through the increased use of renewable energy and by replacing outdated process equipment and lighting with more efficient technologies.
To the extent feasible, process cooling water is recirculated, cooled and reused prior to discharge. Several of our operating sites recycle wastewater and reuse back into the process. A total of 1,465,701 cubic meters of wastewater was discharged from all our global operations site in 2017, much of which was non-contact cooling water. Approximately 9576 cubic meters of water was recycled and reused in 2017 by three of our facilities.
Axalta programs and procedures provide guidance globally for treatment or disposal of materials at commercial waste management facilities. Our initial goal for waste reduction from our liquid coating manufacturing centers was set at 5 percent between baseline 2013 and 2020. However, as of year-end 2016, we exceeded that goal with a 16 percent reduction in waste. Consequently, we reset our goal to reduce waste from liquid coating manufacturing facilities by an additional 5 percent between the new baseline year 2015 and realization in 2020.
Axalta completed the CDP 2017 Climate Change information request as part of our commitment to transparency and information exchange with stakeholders.
Manufacturing consistently superior quality products demands rigorous standards for the materials we use. At Axalta, product stewardship means:
- Carefully selecting raw materials that provide the best product performance while minimizing risk to human health and the environment.
- Designing products to protect the surfaces they cover, promote product lifespan and reduce the demand for additional raw materials.
- Providing accurate information to maximize the safe use, handling, storage, and distribution of our products.
Quality is essential in everything we do. Our major manufacturing sites meet ISO 9001 quality management systems certification, and sites supplying automotive OEMs are also TS/IATF 16949 certified, as established by the International Automotive Task Force. Adherence to common quality standards is the first step in our commitment to quality. Our operations follow additional quality excellence systems that set goals and apply disciplines, which in many cases exceed those set by the quality standards.
